ok,i´m currently working on a rather complex app done in flash.
i´ve decided to do it in mx 2004 and i extremely regret the decission by now as i get lots of crashes and (as this blog post states) the exporting time for my movies gets extremely long.
Anyway,i´m a long time user of flash and really love all the good sides of flash,so i deeply hope that this update will let me work happily with flash again.
Besides that i hope that you guys mainly work on a player with extremely better performance,especially in handling graphics/rendering speed for the next full version of flash.
mx 2004 was an extreme disappointment for me as rendering and overall performance was not improved noticably though its needed extremely.
I think without a great deal of work on that part flash will loose ground and most serious developers to other things like processing.
Serious developers are daily pushing flash to its limits,mx2004 pushed the frontier a bit further in terms of code handling/execution (though still not enough imho) but the graphic handling is extremely dated nowadays.
Sorry if this post of mine sounds harsh but i´ve had about lots of crashes today,so i´m pissed now and besides that i´m bored of not beeing able to use/movie graphics as i want because the player can´t handle it.
DO you have an approximate release date in mind for the Ellipsis update?

Feel free to release this update anytime. Many of these issues should have been ironed out before the release, along with a complete set of documentation.

Macromedia may have been able to get away with this crap before, but the enterprise community attemting to use Flash for ria's don't have the patience or time to screw around with a half baked products.

i totally agree with your first sentence.
the documentation avaliable on release lacked in previous version (at least in some),too,but i´ve never experienced such a half baked full version release before.
I started out with flash 3 and used each version so much that it became (part of) my job and allowed mye entering several companies,so i i was aware of flash´s (and the player´s) limitations and it was even fun in a way finding a workaround to avoid them/get passed anyway,but that was just because i noticed a serious improvement in each flash full release.
the last one wasn´t like that at all.
what do lots of compnents and better code execution bring me if a often crashing development environment make me mad and the player can´t handle half of the things which could be done code and conceptwise.
for example ´when i´m working on stuff i´m trying to limit the use of vectors and text as much as possible as otherwise my project gets a serious performance hit on slower (and even standard) pcs.
what´s the sense of the great vector engine if it can´t be handled with good performance.
it can´t be used in fast paced games nor in applications which are more than a simple fill out form.
for forms and simple (compared to desktop applications,even if called RIAS) browser all other browser languiages are catching up and its already changed,its no more that most thiongs only work in one browser and not even in that you can´t achieve what you can in flash.
therefore flash has to tune up if it wants to have good arguments even for RIAS beeing slightly more than a form.
flash has become an industry standard,so it probably won´t deminish totally if changes are not made asap but it will surely get harder to attract serious developers and good paying clients.
at the office i made a shop application for a trade fair in which exhibitors of the trade fair can buy products for their booth and place some of them in their booth area on a map.
the application receives the coordinates of all booths for the hall/fair on load and also which booth is the one of the active exhibitor.
the the hall is drawn in real size using the drawing api and then scaled down in aspect ratio (and moved) so that the active booth fits into the editing area.
In that way exhibitors can scroll around the hall to see where their booth is,where the ways to exits etc go and place products on their booth area.
all of that would probably be called RIA now and i was quite proud of the achievement and also about flash 6 as it allowed doing stuff like this but the downside was that most of my development time was spent on optimising on the performance rather than coding the thing itself.
Besides that it still gets slower the more objects you place and the more the slower your pc is.
we were actually into doing a new version for this year´s fairs in mx 2004 but after my experiences with the app i´m currently working on (see my last post) i´m not convinced this is a good idea right now.
Again,don´t get my post wrong,i wouldn´t write two negative posts in a blog if i wouldn´t feel really connected to a topic in a way.
over the years as my experience and flash´s feature set and capabilities grew i started to love flash more and more,i strongly hope ellipsis changes enough flaws and the next full version adds enough new features and improves performance to about 200% so that my love for it raises again instead of deminishing.
i have the feel that the release of 2004 was strongly ruled by marketing people,more than its good for a product and it shows.
i hope that the developers of flash get more impact on the release date this time and can create something the flash sceen is waiting for.

No kidding. It is going to be a long, long time before I buy a Macromedia product again. I'm happy that they're taking the unprecidented step of updating one of their Flash releases, but I've been suffering with their "Professional" version of Flash for close to a year now. I feel like I've been professionally scammed. My assumption from now on is going to be: new releases from Macromedia are beta-quality at best until I hear otherwise from the users. I don't know... I've used Macromedia Flash MX 2004 on a daily basis since it came out. I've found problems here and there but to call it half baked is a little extreme. I haven't found any bugs I couldn't work around with some minor adjustments in my workflow. Overall I've been impressed with the quality Flash MX 2004 as well as with the great improvements ActionScript 2 brought.

For the amount of functionality Flash has and the price you get it at, I really think they're doing a good job with it.

i totally disagree with your last sentence,i mean no matter what price a product has,if it needs several updates before most of the buyers can use it propperly (because of lots of flaws etc.),its no money worth at all.i agree with "also unhappy",it was a really bad move by macromedia to abuse the flash users as beta testers while letting them pay for a full price application (suite) version.
as the statements by "also unhappy" show this directly leads to a bad reputation for mm and flash if it takes place once,the more often it takes place,the more developers will get reluctant to get a new version.
thanks to my job i know many persons with different system specs who own and use mx 2004 on a daily base,so i can charge pretty well what´s the case for the bigger part of the owners.
flash mx 2004 has many really big bugs,many which show that it wasn´t tested propperly and long enough before release.
Many of the bugs causing freezes,crashes or even file corrupting seem to be directly related to wrongly handling of memory usage.
In many flaws memory is overly pumped full or not freed again when possible.
Therefore people with more ram probably suffer less than people with standard ram size.
some flaws also seem to be heavy on the cpu,so again people with newer/newest pc specs suffer less than ones with standard machines.
(of course there are many other flaws which aren´t related to either of the two,i just think that´s the reasong why some users can work with it while others don´t trust their app at all anymore (experience one crash after 6 hours of coding and realize even your last saved version was corrupted and you´ll more agree on my statement about the half baked version ;) )
I often hang around on flash dev boards/forums,i´m even mod at several ones,so i know that many users suffer from and experience the same.
sorry to say but that is not acceptable for an application which costs several hundred euros/dollars.
And on the faster AS handling,sure,that´s nice as i said,too,but its nothing worth if the graphic/rendering engine can´t handle half the stuff you could code.

Yeah, I really liked the upgrade to the scripting language as well. To me, that was reason alone to buy MX 2004. However, I spent the extra money for the Professional version since I do entirely data-driven applications, and I feel that none of the extra features of the Pro version work well enough or are bug free enough to actually be of much use in serious RIA development. "Working around" bugs in the way the RDBMSResolver updates the DataSet, for example, is not really feasible; it's a complex relationship and there's no source code to look at and debug yourself. The only realy option is to create your own versions of the components, but then what the hell did I pay MM extra money for?

I'm really hoping that this upcoming update fixes the problems in the Pro version. But I have a feeling that not many people are really using it and so Macromedia is more likely to focus on bugs that effect all users. Therefore, I feel thoroughly ripped off by Macromedia for scamming me into spending extra for the Pro version... But! I'm crossing my fingers that the update will fix the problems in the Pro version as well. If it does, I'll be happy and stop whining. (Though it'll still be a long time before I trust MM enough to buy a new version.)

I got so tired of waiting for the flash IDE to compile my pure AS project that I gave up and started using a third party compiler which is MUCH faster .. my compile-times have gone down from around 30-40s to around 9s.

Oh and with the extra layers of optimisation in the compiler, the resultant SWF file executes faster too!

yep,Al is right,i like sepy and some others,really helpful,especially once you work on projects which are mainly code driven.
Mike Downey,thanks for the feedback,i strongly admit your blog and open ear for user feedback,honstly,besides the several years i spent working with flash,its the main reason why i didn´t give flash up yet. (i strongly hope things will get good again with the next version and your blog gives hope =) ).

On a side note, I hope MM fired that ass clown marketing/sales person that caused them to push the MX 2004 product out the door before it was ready. It could be a software engineering case study on the pitfalls of designing to schedule.

I think Sepy is just an editor, not a compiler, right?

I don't think it is FlashCommand, as that essentially just uses the Flash IDE to do the compilation, and thus would not speed up the compile time.

i didn´t know you could compile flash (swfs) other than using flash (well,i created swfs with php once but that wasn´t really the same ;))

I'm using the Kinetic Fusion 2.0 RVML compiler, right now its still in beta, however its at the RC2 stage so it shouldnt be long before its released publicly.

Before you all get too excited about the prospect of another speed increase, much of the acelleration we get by using the KF compiler is down to the fact that I have worked quite cloesly with Alex on the way that he picks up the stack variables (aka: 6.0.79 optimisations), meaning that with our codebase most operations are performed using the registers rather than the traditional 'getMember' references the flash IDE would generate.

As a result, our AS1 codebase resembles a bastardised form of AS2 without all the cute syntax and cool features, and is almost unrecognisable as AS1!

The KF compiler does support AS2, and components, however I havent actually used these features, since I'm working with a huge AS1 codebase which will take a good while to port, as for components well I'm none to keen on the bugs the player introduces when you try to mingle IDE and AS created clips, nevermind the bloat that they introduce.

The KF compiler will NOT compile FLA files though, it can only take input as RVML which is an XML description of the SWF file contents. This is not a problem for me however since my project is pure code, so I just use it as an XML 'makefile' which includes all of my AS files.
