Digicam astronomy

Digicam astronomy: Leander Kahney at WIRED has a short article on how relatively cheap digital cameras, telescopes and post-processing are allowing many amateurs to create astronomical photographs rivalling those of the largest and most well-funded observatories just a few years before. This isn't directly MX-related, but reminds me of that "empowering the edges" discussion... it's good that more people can do more than before, even though this means that people who previously enjoyed intermediary positions may have to change. (This came up a bit last week when some FlashComm developers wondered what would happen when anyone could use a Breeze Live meeting.) Skilled specialists do have a role to play -- the rising tide does lift all boats -- but the skills of the specialist do change and improve over time, they don't remain static. An observatory which only took old-style photos wouldn't keep up with these empowered edges, or the new skills added by other specialists.
