Pirate Anime FAQ

Pirate Anime FAQ: This is an extensive guide to counterfeit animation and related goods, including a good set of tips on how to tell whether what you're purchasing is the real thing. (Randy Dotinga writes in WIRED that as much of the third of the money paid for animation in the US is for fraudulent material.) The recent pricedrop in DVD recorders means that many items on sale help subsidize people you may not like, instead of people you do like. This particularly excellent FAQ is also available in German and French translations.

Speaking strictly about anime, I can understand why the unlicensed anime DVD market is there. It's that most Japanese anime never makes it to the states.. and when it does... its years later. Many times the subtitling is worse on the release version than on a fan-sub you might pick up at some online anime seller or at a convention.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was released in 1984 (awesome flick by Miyazaki) and has never made it to the States.. but I have a copy picked up at an anime convention. If and when it does make it to the US.. i will pick it up on DVD and retire my very old VHS tape of it
