The Hype Machine

The Hype Machine: This is a different type of weblog aggregator... instead of listing changed content at many weblogs, or automatically pulling down entire essays for offline reading, this site trawls blogs looking for MP3 or other music files, and then lists what people are linking to. There's also a SWF player available for auditing. Why's it important enough to me to cite? Because it shows how there's a variety of ways in which we can distill knowledge from a group. (Speaking of "aggregating", that term is being misused (imho) on the Lessig blog during his vacation -- the process of collection is different from the process of induction. Hayekian "price as signal" arguments are a bit different from the blogosphere, although the eventual linkage patterns among blogs are closer to spontaneous order and nomos.)
