Web annoyances survey
Web annoyances survey: 2432 US consumers were asked this month what they think the most annoying things on the web are. Over a third cited sites which open unrequested new windows (popup ads, etc). Next came mandatory site registration and installation of new software to view the site, each cited by about one consumer in six. "Slow loading pages" was named by about 10%. But it's interesting to check out the annoyances which polled under 5%... dead links, mystery-meat navigation, outdated content, no contact info, and then down at 2% we see "music blaring", "can't search site"... and beneath that was "animation and splash screens", at about 1.5%. I know there must be some kind of story with this poll, this page, and this site, but I just can't quite grab the punchline yet.... ;-)

That sound is as low as 2% doesn't really surprise me all that much, given that most of the US sites I visit don't have sound.
Here in Norway, Jamba and a few other select companies make heavy use of flash ads with sound, and most, if not all people I know want to see the person behind that frog strung up.

Thank god for surveys. I can now tell my clients that 95.3% users are not annoyed by dead links.

I think the most interesting part of the survey is that only 0.3% of those surveyed mentioned bad design, opposed to over 9% that said "slow loading pages". To me, this means that design is not as important as user experience. A nice design that takes a long time to load is more likely to annoy people than a bad design that loads fast. Good news for us non-designers who don't use popups, forms, registration, or Flash. ;-)
