PSP SWF context
PSP SWF context: Gamespot.com summarizes an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment platform development chief Izumi Kawanishi which originally appeared in ITMedia.co.jp (that's a search link, I wasn't able to quickly determine the exact article :( The quote which caught my eye: "Sony's developers are considering adding Macromedia Flash support for PSP's Web browser in the future, as well as expanding Javascript functions. Kawanishi explained they need to determine Flash's performances on the PSP before coming to a conclusion. Kawanishi said that his team basically has an open stance toward network-related functions, and Flash playback was not intentionally ignored. On the other hand, Kawanishi explained that security issues prompted the team to leave out some Javascript support, such as allowing scripts to access the UMD. The PSP development team is planning to release a guideline manual for content providers so they can make Web pages catered to the PSP. Kawanishi is also considering disclosing the specs to the public as well." I got the link from PSPWorld, which had a headline which seemed a bit in excess of what I could actually read in their source link... from what I read it sounded like there was no barrier, just a decision on whether it was practical. But I don't know the context of how this came up in the original conversation, so it's hard to evaluate the info right now.

That's good - the more platforms the better. Any idea on whether the PSP2 or the Xbox 360 will be supporting the Flash player?

No idea... from sad experience I've learned to rely on what a group actually public commits to, rather than taking hallway talk about this or that "might" happen.
SWF is a larger part of everyday experience in Japan than elsewhere, that's the only other observation I've had since logging that article last night.

After playing around with the browser last night, I can see their concern about performance.
Most blogs render exceptionally well, since the layouts are centered and almost all text. (BlogCFC looks great.)
However, upon loading a small photoshop contest thread on a certain famous weird news site, the PSP threw an out of memory error in my face rather quickly.
Loading pages and switching between tabs when anything other than mostly text pages were open was incredibly slow. It had trouble displaying pages that were already loaded when switching between tabs, and at one point I had to restart the device.
It leads me to believe that something like Central would be better suited to browse Flash content on the PSP, because I simply don't think with the browser running it can handle it.

Concerns about performance to me are totally dependant on Sony and MM's commitment to porting the player. I don't buy the notion that the hardware can not handle rendering swfs when the PSP can render 3d games the way the PSP does.

I haven't tried to play SWF on PSP but i am very interested in this topic. I wonder if Sony/Macromedia can provide a flash player standalone to play only just Swf files

We are really interested on this topic, we are currently writing on Spanish PSP Comunity and this are great news!
Hope we can navigate viewing SWF and Javascript as well, in near future.
We will develop an article in Spanish talking about this great news, hope you don't mind we refer to your post. Thanks,

i have also been looking into this issue extensively. I am a professional and i would really like to load .swf files to present my work with a customizable interactive interface. It would be so much cooler than presenting from a laptop.

Well, now you can... thats a great idea to view flash content for preview on a PSP instead of a laptop.
Sony just release Macromedia Flash support!
Im so happy. This is actually why I bought a PSP. I thought it would happen alot sooner.
As of Systemsoftware version 2.70.
I did a quick hello world .swf which you can find at:
http://www.pspflash.net/swf_examples/hello_world_psp_flash.swf
Somewhere the hellow world takes on a whole new meaning when you can do it in flash on a newer device.
Flash is great for portable devices. I see a big future with it.

I would like to see someone make a DooM swf game that would be playable on psp.Instead of having to downgrade your psp or use eloader. If you know about a swf shooter game please email me.willhilton_80@hotmail.com

I don't know about Doom as a swf for PSP but the Developers for the Flash API have created a system where you can embed .exe files directly into a swf file, and one of the applications they used to demonstrate this was the original Doom - it's going to be so awesome if this becomes a mainstream practice for Flash.
