Reynolds on video

Reynolds on video: At Popular Mechanics, Glenn Reynolds has a three-page essay, with two pages of resources, on how decentralized media production may be a greater threat to "Hollywood" than is their current worry about unlicensed consumption. Glenn points out how production costs are dropped, but I think the decrease in distribution costs is just as important -- the world produces more than enough food, but it's getting it where it's needed which leads to famine. Against these decreasing costs, there will be an important increasing cost: the ability to usefully navigate tons and tons of new video content... the social recommendation systems (eBay, Flickr etc) have a significant role to play here. "I think the entertainment industry is scared to death of amateur content, and wants to make life difficult for amateurs and alternative distribution networks." Regulation is an established business's best friend....
