MySpace & EMBEDs?
MySpace & EMBEDs? Anyone have more info on this? I was running some searches on current discussions, and see that myspace.com has temporarily blocked EMBED tags in the content they host, which has had an effect on many people who use SWF for audio or video players, cyberpets, more. I'm not sure about the "filtering EMBEDs" claim... seems like they'd have to temporarily block OBJECT tags too, for any practical effect. But I haven't been able to search up source info. Anybody got more context? Thanks!

I can't speak for the distant past, but for as long as I'm aware of, OBJECT tags have always been filtered out. From my tests, more recently, they have been switching .swf EMBEDS into iframes (though I seem to remember that sometimes this wasn't the case) and allowing type="application/x-mplayer2" to go through. I'm not sure about other types of embeds, though, but I think some were entirely stripped as well.
As far as the context for the current situation - I'm not sure if its a security issue or merely a technical issue. As much as I'd like to talk anything Coldfusion related up, the site is extremely inconsistent. Obviously high traffic contributes to that, but the current features that are down right now, in addition to EMBEDS are: IMs, chatrooms, and image uploads, as well as warnings of lags on home pages and mail pages.

right now EMBEDs seem to be working again (i.e. not filtered).
myspace changes its HTML filtering code frequently, it seems. they used to change EMBEDs to IFRAMEs. now they don't allow IFRAMEs at all. at one point (and this may still be the case, i am not sure) they filtered out swf files based on the extension of the 'SRC' attribute in EMBEDs, which is pretty silly... kids would use tinyurl.com and other such sites to get around that.
the most recent EMBED blocking was due to the "Ali G" myspace worm, which didn't get much press... i'm betting it didn't spead as far. see this myspace forum thread for more details.
if you're curious, i've chronicled some of the steps i've had to go through to deal with myspace in my blog.

Has anyone noticed that on the Myspace Artist pages (the independent and local ones) Their media players, provided by myspace.com, are not keeping an accurate count on the number of views or the number of plays? While featured (myspace artist picked by myspace) and Major label artist such as Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, or 50 cent go unaffected. Number of views, plays, and downloads determines Top Artist of the day. Any comment or care?

Ladies and gentlemen,
There is a way to embed iframes, javascript, etc. in myspace!!! I am finishing up the software plugin… Imagine using the EMBED tag to display external HTML page… within that page you will be able to use ANY HTML, EMBED, JAVA APPLET, JAVA SCRIPT, ETC. ETC. in your MySpace Page… I have two weeks of testing to get done… I will let you guys know!!! So far, it works like a charm!!! (on PC's) I swear!!

[jd sez: I have no idea. I wasn't conversant with MySpace conventions back in 2005 when this blogpost was written, and haven't gotten into it since then either.]
