OneStat stats

OneStat stats: Richard MacManus quotes a OneStat study saying that 86% of the Internet uses Windows XP. But such hitbox methods have had self-selection problems in the past -- they're only looking at sites which install a OneStat webbug, and they don't disclose which method they use to detect OS version. In the past this methodology has produced discrepancies with other tests. Other "people visiting our sites" studies are here. It seems that in this fifth year of Windows XP availability has reached majority among Windows flavors, so the general trend of the statistics seem right, but this OneStat press release seems skewed absolutely in ways similar to its previous audience samplings. Summary: I wouldn't take the headline at face value.
