SEO reality
SEO reality: These tips from Matt Cutts of Google have already appeared in MXNA, but I think they're valuable enough to bump up further. He starts by considering his desired search terms, and the competition for those terms. He doesn't worry about every instance of every word in his site -- he thinks about the person he wants to reach, and how they would likely try to discover services like his. SEO discussion which doesn't start here seems braindead to me. The person you want to reach -- how will they be looking for you? what other content is competing for that search term? After that Matt gets into the mechanics of using titles and URLs and category and bodytext. He later hints at domain influence... if you become a recognized expert on a discrete topic, then each article you write helps the next. I'm surprised he does not mention the value of anchor text on authoritative inbound links, though... I still see examples each month of "Googlebombing" effects, whether intentional or inadvertent, where sites which link to your article push it higher in results. Matt's viewpoint of looking at the content in context, and of considering how others might navigate to you, makes this a very important short article, I think.
