Mars project

Mars project: This hit Labs this week, and I suspect it will repay your attention. Mars is an XML representation of PDF, sort of like how Flex is an XML representation of SWF. Where Flex uses serverside compilation of XML to SWF, Mars compresses XML to deliverable ZIP, which will then be readable by the free Adobe Reader. The goal is to enable diverse workflows. Among other things, SVG XML is used to describe some page content. I don't know much about the project yet, other than what is in the public record, but it seems like it promises to open the Adobe document reader to well-formed XML representations of documents, enabling an even wider range of content creators to reliably engage their audiences. More perspective from Nabeel Al-Shamma.

"Where Flex uses serverside compilation of XML to SWF..."

Ummm, dude. Did you write this post last year or something? Might want to edit that.

[jd sez: Right, "compiles during the publishing process", my error.]

More context Monday, from Bill McCoy, who discusses Mars alongside Adobe Digital Editions and "Open eBook Publication Structure Container Format" (OCF).
