One hundred million dollars

One hundred million dollars: Wow. I had to check my ears, but Creative Mac and FlashMagazine confirm what I heard: "Adobe also plans to invest approximately $100 million in venture capital over the next 3-5 years in companies leveraging Adobe platform technologies, particularly companies delivering applications via Apollo, as part of Adobe's commitment to building an ecosystem for the Adobe(R) Engagement Platform." That's a lot of Flex Builder licenses! Key quote I heard, in paraphrase: Apollo will let you take your existing skills in browser development or Flash, and not only create standalone system apps, but also create cross-platform standalone system apps. No learning a new language just to hit one platform, no learning multiple environments to hit multiple platforms... your existing skills, multiple environments, and a hundred million bucks behind it. Wow.

Jesse Warden heard it too. Maybe it's still a mass hallucination, though, let me keep on reading....

Hmm, Ryan Stewart heard it too, maybe there's something in the water here, that still seems too amazing to be true....

Yup, Tony MacDonell heard it too... I guess it's true. Hey, I'm sprawled in the hallway outside MAXUP now with Matt Chotin, and we're both wondering why we shouldn't quit Adobe and go for it, that's a lot of dough! (Just kidding, just kidding, I'm having too much fun as it is, can't stand no more.... ;-)

Ekkkkk now thats a serious headline! Man Adobe is lifting the bar on Micro$oft. It will be interesting the eligability for the funding :o)

Hmmm...and how does one get a piece of that? As if I needed any incentive to develop for Apollo ;-)

That should more than cover Flex Builder licenses, but we'll have to wait for the $1 billion dollar fund before anyone can justify Flex Data Services. ;-)

Really cool news buddy.

Well, two years on from this post, and Apollo has changed to AIR and (I think) this year is when we're going to start seeing some major development on this front. My opinion is that is going to change the market big time; MS is in for a hard time in the future. Adobe is going to take, and make, a new market, and I think it's going to change the way the software industry functions in a big way. We're in for some surprising, shocking, and delightful times ahead. Finally, the industry is getting incredibly interesting again.
