MS & DRM
MS & DRM: Bill Gates talks with 14 bloggers. Michael Arrington of TechCrunch asked him about "DRM" (quotes are because they just used the label, didn't confirm their meaning). The subsequent paragraphs were about BigMusic and ripping CDs and buying songs online. There was no mention of how you yourself might want to manage permissions for who can view your online presentation, or who can edit a document you created, or who can pull your business data through their dashboard. The Microsoft conversation was mostly about a current (big!) business model, when they talked around the three letters "D", "R", and "M". I'm more concerned about how any of us might be able to manage the use of the digital bits we create. I don't think they're seeing the whole problem... it's not just the center "doing drm" to the masses on the edges, it's how any of us maintain a connection with our digital bits in the future. The technology will be democratized.

Kelly Goto has the best notes I've seen yet on the Gates appearance. Highlights:
o She lists the names of all 14 web-influencers. (Steve Rubel said "and others".)
o Gates pointed out that fullsized computers may not be the best way to connect for the majority of the world, and mentions work on connecting mobile to home television.
o Scott Guthrie spoke on .NET Framework, ASP2.0, and the Microsoft WPF/e browser plugin which support "XAMEL" and "includes a video CODEX and will support streaming broadcast".
o A presentation on Windows Live, where Microsoft becomes the centralized server hub for peoples' connected experiences.
o Sanjay Parthansarathy spoke of their need to "evangelize" beyond just IT departments.
o Forrest Key presented Microsoft Expression, but there are no notes on this part.

Liz Gannes asked about "The Future of Web Apps" and the answer was about tying advertising to data, rather than just presentation.
Niall Kennedy did some original reporting on the whole Linux/SCO/indemnification set of issues.
I keep on checking back at Dave Winer, but there's nothing there yet.

Molly Holzschlag has a transcript of her question "What would you tell the skeptics out there regarding your commitment to the implementation of open Web Standards in your products?"
