PDF, 3D models
PDF, 3D models: Press release today, about how Adobe Acrobat 3D can now open many current CAD files directly... no export filters needed from modeling/architecture applications, you can just open up 3D models directly in Acrobat. The realtime 3D engine inside Adobe Reader and other Adobe PDF viewers can then render this model, with rotation, zooming, cutaways, finding, lighting/shading, other interactivity. No connection yet with 3D printing, although I hope this will eventually become a practical reality. Manufacturers like Acrobat 3D because it lets people share and inspect designs, packaged up with bill-of-goods and other documentation, without the manufacturer having to release the full CAD plans for actually producing the object. The ability to import popular CAD files directly seems a significant step.
