Vista XMP
Vista XMP: Ed Bott at ZDNet reports on "Vista's Three Killer Features", and one of these is the ability to embed metadata within photographs and to use this information when sorting or processing files. They use the Extensible Metadata Format to directly associate metadata with a media asset, rather than using external metadata files which could get separated from the media. Scott Dart from Microsoft has background on the advantages. I'm calling it out here because I think we're just at the start of really using metadata with media elements... for instance, already today the camera can automatically timestamp your photos and include details like shutterspeed or geolocation. But it's definitely possible for applications to generate more metadata about a set of media assets too... we, ah, might see startling demonstrations of such possibilities at SIGGRAPH this year. The automation of metadata is a key part of realworld production workflows... this use within Vista's Photo Gallery is a key marker of universal adoption, and there's discussion at Flickr on similar themes... if you haven't yet checked into XMP then it might be a good technology to have on your radar.
