Anonyms vs bloggers

Anonyms vs bloggers: Yesterday Techmeme went nuts about rude and threatening messages to A-listers. I kept wondering where they were when Michelle Malkin was being threatened last year. Regardless of what you may think about her facts, opinions, or style, she's got some good advice here: "(1) Report the serious threats to law enforcement. (2) Keep blogging. Don't cut and run." Another thing I think we've got to do is discount those who choose to slag others anonymously, who mount sockpuppet campaigns to discredit others, who argue ad-hominem instead of ad-rem. Some sites may have nasty individual commenters, but other sites support an entire anonymous attack culture. Anonymous posting can be useful, but if you don't "own your own words" yourself, why should the rest of us give them our attention...?

I see that Alan Herrell is taking a hit on this too. I don't know all the details of this particular story, but I've known "The Head Lemur" on webdev mailing lists for years, and he's a square guy -- strange, but square. (I've had good takes on Kathy Sierra and the Scobles too.)

My main concern in all this is how blogswarms tend to focus on some issues but ignore others -- the pressures for groupthink always remain strong.
