Dual auto-updates
Dual auto-updates: If I'm understanding this correctly, the Firefox auto-update mechanism will split into two streams: those who choose to get the regular "release" version, and those who choose a "beta" track, with pre-release versions of security updaters. The "app.update.channel" preference in about:config will show either "release" or "beta" -- installation of any beta will put you on the "beta" track of auto-updates, and manually installing the current release build will automatically put you back into the "release" stream. People who installed pre-release versions of Firefox 2.0 are already entered in the "beta" track, and Mozilla will be manually accepting new testers soon. This sounds interesting... seems like it will satisfy those who need the latest and greatest ASAP, as well as those who just want to keep their browsers current without hassles. I haven't seen such an approach before; will be interesting to see how it develops.
