Sphinxlike, sans Apollo
Sphinxlike, sans Apollo: Adobe's cross-OS runtime codenamed "Apollo" is not even in its first preview release, yet public anticipation seems so high that Cerulean Studios writes in a FAQ of their new messaging project: "This is not powered by Adobe Apollo technology." I don't think I've ever seen that before, where developers have to deal with questions about third-party technology which hasn't even entered its first preview release, much less reached any kind of actual 1.0 release. The Cerulean presentation itself seems almost like a riddle to me -- I think he's implying that your portable clientside logic can access the Windows System Tray of kiosk computers without installation of any native code, possibly without prior installation of any Trillian code on the system at all, although the PC does require Adobe Flash Player 9 -- it's hard to say what they're doing until they say it themselves. But feeling the need to specifically say "No, we're not using Apollo" in an introductory message, even before Apollo hits its initial preview releases... this indicates a surprisingly high level of awareness out there, about what the Apollo team is attempting to achieve. From Cerulean's whitepaper it sounds like the demo requires installation of their next-gen clientside engine, in OS-native code, which then allows you to synch with a local web browser application (possibly IP matching and serverside push?). But despite reading and watching, I'm still working from insufficient information.

Hi John - we wrote this prior to really understanding much about Apollo, but were not attempting to disparage it in any way. If Apollo solves our problems and can improve upon the experience, we'd love to use it and help promote its prowess. Send us a beta! :)
[jd sez: Understood, no worries! Good luck on the project. (I'm hearing in the blogs that Apollo preview will be up on labs.adobe.com soon, but I don't know the date yet myself.)]
