Network-independence

Network-independence: One of the nice things about "cloud computing" is that you've got device-independence, and your application and data can be accessed from various machines. But the tradeoff is that when the remote server goes down, you can't get any work done, as today's Blackberry outage shows. Usually we think of occasional connectivity as travelling between WiFi zones, or working at conferences and other high-demand areas. Different types of applications have different requirements for being able to work while disconnected, and it will take us all awhile to sort out the permutations and conventions of such work (and messaging remains hard!), but we're finally starting to make real progress in enabling network-independence as well as device-independence.
