Joost FAQ
Joost FAQ: The desktop video player gets $45 million in venture funding... that's a lot! Anil Gupte has a short post showing some of the differences from other video projects: reliance on live peer-to-peer connection, and fixed schedules of particular centralized content, like cable TV, are some of the key points he mentions. The upcoming Adobe Media Player (FAQ, video) differs in a number of significant ways, including more control for viewers, more control for creators, more choice for advertisers. Both are currently described by the phrase "desktop video player", but I think that as we get closer in we'll see how these basic decisions affect the different ways each initiative can evolve.

"including more control for viewers, more control for creators, "
I'm pretty sure that's a dichotomy.
[jd sez: If options were a zero-sum game, where one person's gain can only occur by another person's loss, then that trichotomy might indeed have been a contradiction. But where choices expand for each party, then even if neither gets everything they want, they each get more choices.]

jd: copyright holders who choose to put their conent under default license already have and option to give them rights above all others-- it's called copyright. I believe DRM is an end-run around that system. How is fair use built in Adobe's DRM system?
In any case I will not be installing a flash with DRM built-in.

[jd sez: Not sure what you're talking about, sorry.]
