"Print to Kinko" update

"Print to Kinko" update: The recent Adobe Acrobat upgrade added the ability to print to a local Kinko's and have it be delivered by FedEx. The goal is to make it easy to provide non-digital bits wherever you wish. But the initial implementation had some irritations: (a) I missed the impact geo-restrictions would have in this early test (see comments at my weblog); (b) printers who are not Kinko's are aggrieved (see source story in GraphicArts); (c) enterprise administrators who had printing policies were also disaccommodated. That last concern is quick to address -- see this overview, which links to how to disable the button. But this won't scale, obviously -- we need to keep working on it. WhatTheyThink.com has this info: "[Printers organizations] concluded the letter with an invitation to Chizen to participate with them in a discussion of this important issue, to which Chizen responded promptly, expressing an intention to meet soon to address the concerns of NAPL, NAQP, and the printing company executives who support their views." For ongoing info, watch blogs.adobe.com and acrobatusers.com. I learned about it from Phil Thompson on Acrobat Talk. Kudos to the Acrobat team for quick response! Me, I think this is an important area to get right, because 3D printers are increasing every day, and soon we'll have fabrication to remote locations... I'll admit I've got a craving for replicators, I will.... ;-)

JD I've been a strong advocate of adobe in the past and they have come through with some great products including adobe reader, However 8.1 and the FedEX link is a bit much! We have already started considering alternative products and put off our decision to upgrade to CS3. Yes the icon can be removed but I couldn't find a way to remove it from the File dropdown menu. As a user of Adobe Print Ready I would love to have a way to route users to my print on demand services. Abobe's agreement with FedEx is a slap in the face to all the independant printers across the country

[jd sez: Well, if you'd like to vent, I'm here for you. But have you picked up yet, from material like the above, that this whole situation is likely to change soon...?
