"Flash to decline"
"Flash to decline": Java to take its place, according to this prediction: "I've spent the last week in the bay area at secret clandestine meetings secretly planning the amazing top secret future... 2008 will be the year that client Java starts taking market share from Flash... By JavaOne we will have completely re-energized client Java. And I mean client Java, not just desktop Java. Everything will be faster, prettier, easier to use, and easier to deploy. We will be better in the browser. We will be better on the desktop. We will be better on the phones. Existing technologies are being updated and new technologies will see their debut at JavaOne, if not earlier." Sounds like part of it is the modularization of clientside Java as "the Java Kernel Project". More here, including a nice line about "the Highlander theory" that "there can be only one." Also, a clever book title, "Filthy Rich Clients". Next up we have sports news, but first the weather....

I'm not holding my breath on this one. Java screwed the pooch a long time ago and I don't see that they are just going to come back and start kicking ass and taking names. I've heard this too many times to believe it.

I'm all for competition, but I agree with the above. Will it be smaller, lighter? Not just faster?

What about development though?

LOL, this is obviously something we'll all have to see to really believe. I don't believe it. And even if I see it, I don't think I'll believe it! It's crazy that they've made so many mistakes with JAVA. It's pretty clear, to me, that with Flex, and with Flash moving forward, and Adobe's real drive on the internet with RIA and a host of other things, that they will certainly be left behind with JAVA. Unless they do something amazing (like they say) nothing's really going to change. Time will tell if this will really live up to its own predictions.
