Mac stats
Mac stats: Earlier this week CNN laid out some new stats I hadn't seen before. In Apple's recent financial disclosures, computers were once again the largest revenue segment. They're the third-largest manufacturer in the US. Overall marketshare is above 5%, but 15% of the total is servers, and an undisclosed percentage of remaining sales are institutional/enterprise... the actual discretionary desktop purchase seems to be pretty significantly Apple (and, even more significantly, Mac/Win). I like the conclusion: "So what's the lesson? Apple is growing faster than its competitors because it improves its hardware and software more often than anyone else."

I've been in the market for a new PC for the better part of 3 months now, really unable to decide between building a new Windows box (cheaper), and going Mac (expensive, but less clutter and a safe choice for jumping OS'es). Apple has made it pretty tough to decide. I need a change from Windows, but OS X has a few things that annoy me a great deal. (Linux is out of the question because of some of the tools I use.) Having one box that can run anything is tempting. Can I borrow $3k?

Of course you can borrow -- many credit card companies provide 18-month interest-free opportunities. An additional savings can be realized by purchasing from the online apple refurb store. The main difference appears to be the packaging. And believe me, the Windows box is only cheaper if your time is valueless. But either way you can still do free Flex development using the free Flex SDK, compiling from the command line, and textwrangler to edit your files, and command-line ftp the results up to your server. So there!
