Viral imaging
Viral imaging: I can't remember ever seeing a SIGGRAPH demo with this type of viral popularity. John Nack had the first reference I saw to this seam-carving video, ten days ago, and there have been multiple waves of links since then... first Digg, then Slashdot, then Techmeme. Still hasn't hit the hometown newspapers, but I guess it's tough to show a video on wood pulp. The most impressive thing for me has been how, when someone sees this research into finding the best pixels to remove from an image to shrink it, they immediately want to tell their friends. I suspect there will be knockoff implementations soon (some are discussing how you can do the same with a printed photos, scissors, and enough patience) but there's a ton of advanced imaging research being done at Adobe now -- in five years we'll look back at today's primitive image-editing and laugh. It's a good sign that so many on the web react so strongly to this video.
