'Photoshop Express' note
'Photoshop Express' note: John Nack's got the info here, on the first showing of the "online Photoshop" technology mentioned earlier this year. It follows in the footsteps of the Premiere Express technology underlying Photobucket, YouTube, MTV. I don't know yet about how it will be marketed or its features... John's tip was the first public word I've heard. One angle I'd like to add: if you're working at image-processing in a web browser, then keep on doing it. During a prior age of software there were network effects in the distribution channel, and you could only gain shelf space at Egghead at the expense of someone else. Today we've got instant global distribution through the Web, and it's much less zero-sum than before. Adobe is a very authoritative voice in image-processing, but Adobe can't serve all audiences, we've got to do things at a certain scale, localizing in many languages, integrating with other Adobe workflows, maintaining the reputation for polished software. It's definitely possible for a small workgroup to be more fleet and responsive than that, and a small team's lowered production costs means that there are more ranges of client needs which can be satisfied. The business ecology for image-processing work is very rich and diverse these days, and no one player can fully satisfy it. Find an audience need, and fill it... that's a recipe for success, particularly when the audience is as large and varied as it is for imaging work today. Go for it.

I think the best online image editor (also in Flex) is FotoFlexer http://fotoflexer.com/
Try out their Morph function and the Smart Resize effect. Very sophisticated stuff.
[jd sez: ... now I'm wondering whether whoever wrote this is in the brilliant young CEO's mother.... ]
