Targeting yer head
Targeting yer head: A media consultant catalogues techniques to ensure viral buzz; hilarity ensues. "Oh, no, you mustn't hint I can't believe everything I read on The Internets!" is one anguished response. Or all that outrage may be from other marketers trying to scare away newbie competitors... hard to tell, with anonymous commenters. Memory lane: reaction to the instructional course of Jeff Slaton in 1995. People will scam new systems, and anonymous, reputation-free systems are particularly easy to scam. Talking about their techniques is no more objectionable showing how Three Card Monte or a pigeon drop works. We all want to believe, tinkerbellishly, but the internet requires skepticism.
Semi-related: TechCrunch is also running the "MoveOn vs Facebook" story, and the MoveOn lead lectures about corporate ethics while not revealing he has a financial connection with Facebook competitor Google. Both problems come from a lack of reasonable disclosure.
