All SEO snakeoil?

All SEO snakeoil? It's 2008, and yet commercial press still quotes commercial consultants at commercial conferences like this: "However, search engines are unable to read Flash, which creates problems for search marketers. 'It's hard for the search engines to know what to do with the content that's inside this big block of code,' said Craig Macdonald, VP of marketing, alliances and product management for Covario." Conversation to the contrary has been heard for years, and even my first blogpost six years ago today had info these experts lack. Not all SEO is completely wrong and ineffective -- we've seen how stores can flood Google so that it's hard to find actual information -- but the continual presence of well-known lies doesn't speak well for the trade. Conference organizers would be better off barring the uninformed... would improve their credibility. Most sites never place on the first page for incidental bodytext, but search engines definitely find SWF text.

I get a lot of questionable stares when I tell people they're incorrect when thinking Google & Co. can't grab the text in a SWF.

How can we spread the word better?

Credibility will increase with the number of people finding SWF content from normal search.
Good example is the flex directory.
