Flex 2 Beta 3 Released on Labs

Earlier today Flex 2 beta 3 was released on Labs. Beta 3 includes new versions of Flex Builder 2, Flex Data Services 2, Flex Charting 2, ActionScript 3.0, Flash Player 9 (formerly Flash Player 8.5) and the free Flex SDK.

Is there a Linux version of the Flash 8.5/9 plugin available yet?

My company is looking to create a Flex app but is hesitant because of the lack of Linux support (our company is half Mac, half Linux PCs).

I agree Squomes and unfortunately the Beta3-FlashPlayer 9 installer also crashes every time on my Macintosh Tiger Os X.4.6 PowerMac G5 - so no Flex development is possible for me until this is fixed - a Flex Builder2.0 for Mac would also be nice as well.

Hi,

We are working on a Linux version of Flash Player 9, however, it will not ship with the Windows and Mac version in this summer's launch. We are planning to provide a beta version on Adobe Labs for early testing and feedback, but have not yet announced when the beta or the final release is expected to be available.

Sorry to bug you about this here but I can't figure out who else to ask. I've been trying for over 24 hours to d/l Flex 2 Beta 3 but cannot. I get to the page with the download link but when I click the link, in Firefox I get an Alert saying "trials.adobe.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." and in IE I get "The page cannot be displayed (etc)". I must've tried 500 times at least. One other person reported problems on the flexcoders list but I haven't heard any others. Suggestions?

Posted by: Helen Triolo at May 9, 2006 06:35 PM

Hi Helen,

Can you please try the following to see if this corrects the error for you? You may have an older version of the download page cached.

1) Clear your browser's cache.
2) Logout of Labs.
3) Restart your browser.
4) Return to the download page and try again.

Please let me know if this does not work.

Posted by: Daniel Taborga at May 9, 2006 06:47 PM

Thanks for the reply. I've cleared the cache, rebooted my pc, unplugged and restarted the router, called comcast to make sure my bill was paid, and every other thing I could think of to see if the problem was at my end (it still could be, but I can't think what else to try) and I still (yes, after doing 1,2,3,4 above again just now) get that darn "trials.adobe.com cannot be found" message. But I appreciate hearing from a live human anyway!

Posted by: Helen Triolo at May 9, 2006 07:47 PM

Thanks Helen. We will investigate this further on our end.

Posted by: Daniel Taborga at May 10, 2006 09:33 AM

Thank you -- please let me know if any other d/l options become available or any other way to get the beta. I still get kicked out with a "trials.adobe.com could not be found" every time (never had problems downloading macromedia software before -- this is really frustrating)

Posted by: Helen Triolo at May 11, 2006 05:06 AM

Emmy, why is it that Flash development for Linux has been put on the back burner since Adobe acquired Macromedia?

Posted by: macewan at May 12, 2006 04:08 AM

Just wanted to say I got the file finally, from another puter (still don't know why mine won't find trials). What an incredible piece of software this is (and nice job with the tutorials and docs too)

Posted by: Helen Triolo at May 12, 2006 09:20 AM

Hi Macewan,

We are actively working on the Linux port for Flash Player 9. As Emmy mentioned in her blog in December, we did not plan to release Linux at the same time as the Windows and Mac versions. We do not have any release dates to share at this time, but historically, we have released Linux three to six months after the Mac and Windows versions. We expect to have a beta available on Adobe Labs for feedback as part of the development cycle.

Posted by: Daniel Taborga at May 12, 2006 12:47 PM

Hi Helen,

That is great news! We are still trying to trackdown the cause of this error; but, as you may have seen, it appears to be caused by local configurations that we are not accounting for during our download process. Some computers generate errors while many others are fine.

Hi Michael,

Beta 3 is the last release of Flex 2 that will be on Labs; however, it is important to note that it is still not the final product and that the underlying framework may still change. Although you can expect the need to make some changes to your applications to support the final, shipping product, apps that support beta 3 are expected to be in better shape than apps that support earlier versions. If your goal is to get a head start on some projects, using beta 3 is your best bet until the product launches.

Hi daniel,
Thanks for the reply.
I have few more question with this.

1. We have used drag and drop classes, collections, http services in our application. Will we need to change these all??

2. Our application makes browser crash now and then? Is there a bug in flash player 8.5?

3. Any idea of the flex builder 2 beta 3 / final release price ?

thanks in advance...

Posted by: michael white at May 22, 2006 03:27 AM

Hi Michael,

I suspect that the class that you are using in beta 3 may change slightly, but they will not be going away. To confirm, please contact the engineering team resources by posting your question in the appropriate Flex 2 web forum. Many product team resources are reading the forum posts and one should respond to your question.

Please report the crash occurance to the product team via the Flash Player 9 web forum. If you have a public instance of your site and you enable the view source feature, please share these URLs so that the team can try to reproduce the bug locally.

Final pricing for Flex Builder 2 has not yet been determined; however, previously announced estimates put the price at under $1000.

Will shared hosting be available for Flex 2 Beta 3 or for Flex 3? The current licence means that small developers that want to offer Flex can't.

Hello,

I upgraded my Flex application to Beta 3.
Some strange things happen :

1) Background color of my application is not set anymore. Control test case : started Flex builder => created application => set background to black => run application => background stays blue. Is this a bug or is this changed in beta 3 ?

2) Embedding of TTF fonts does nog work anymore :

[Embed(mimeType='application/x-font', source='C:/fonts/SECRETST.TTF', fontName='Secret Service Typewriter')] throws :

"exception during transcoding: No FontManager provided. Cannot build font."

I did not change flex-config.xml, so the font manager should be present ! Bug ?

3) Flex messaging - jms adapter : When sending messages with Flex clients the Java clients receive these messages correct. When the Java clients send a message, the body of this message in the Flex clients is empty, but in the Java clients they are not. JMS adapter bug ? :

(mx.messaging.messages::AsyncMessage)#0
body = (null)
clientId = "192D0D2E-9E0E-8F91-B188-0ECABA99EB05"
correlationId = (null)
destination = "MyTransientTopic"
headers = (Object)#1
DSDstClientId = "192D0D2E-9E0E-8F91-B188-0ECABA99EB05"
messageId = "ID:6-11489428667961"
timestamp = 0
timeToLive = 0

Thanks and good luck with your cool product !

Hi there,

We are developing a mail client and everything is working just as per our expectations.

We are on flex 2 beta 3 and we are not using any data services.

Now the problem is our application is having 3 stages and we use buttons to navigate here and there.

We have embedded few swf files in image tag in few stages.

Now when we move around the stages and mouse over the swf file the browser crashes

Any idea???

thanks in advance...

Hi Alan,

That is a great question, but I do not have enough insight to be able to provide you with an answer. Please post your question in the general Flex 2 web forum and someone on the product team will be able to respond.

Was there ever a fix for the download problem with the beta? IE gives a page cannot be displayed and Firefox gives a connection reset when trying to download the files.

Posted by: Mike at June 7, 2006 08:27 AM

Hi Mike,

Most people cannot reproduce the error at this time; but, for those that still can reproduce this bug, we have made this static download page available:

Hi Mike,

I was wondering where to post this, thought this would be the best place.

We have a flex application and we have embedded few swfs(made in flash 8) into it. Now we are creating a mouseover effect on few butons using this swfs on runtime. (Changing source of swfloader).

It works fine for sometime but after few events the browser crashes.

We are almost complete with our project and we are stucked here.

Thanks in advance!

Whoever is reading this from ADOBE please have a notice here... We are complete with our project of a mail application in flex 2 beta 3 and now when we have ported it to flex 2 release version, the application is not at all working with all UI messed up and no data in datagrid, no support of arrays... anybody knows how to tackle with a migration now??

adobe should support the versions they produce.

Posted by: Mehul at July 5, 2006 06:56 AM

Hi Mehul,

As mentioned in the End User License Agreement for Flex beta 3, Adobe does not officially support prerelease versions of their software. Nonetheless, if you report this issue within the appropriate Flex 2 support forum, someone in the community should be able to assist you.

Hi Mehul,

Flash Player 9 supports IE 7.x. Please try again to install the player (http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer) and if that fails, you may want to try the Flash Player support center (http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/).
